On the Preservation of Knowledge

This edition is intentionally concise. It represents Revision 1.0 — the Committee's present thinking after reviewing the recovered investigations. The goal is not to deliver a final theory, but to record where we stand and to guide subsequent inquiry.

Investigation 047 reframed the problem: instead of asking whether information can survive, we must ask how we recognize information when familiar material carriers are absent or transformed. The point is not theoretical hair-splitting — it governs how evidence is collected, categorized, and trusted.

Evidence is an invitation to inference, not a substitute for it. The Committee emphasizes careful separation between observation and interpretation: catalog what is present, document how it might have arisen, and only then evaluate competing explanations.

Investigation 047 answered remarkably little but created better questions. The Committee lists the most urgent:

• Can information survive independently of its original material carrier?

• Does every recognizable pattern require an identifiable original copy?

• How should scholarship evaluate evidence that contradicts accepted theory?

• Which methods best detect informational continuity across media?

At present the Committee has no satisfactory answers. These questions will guide priorities for Revision 2.
